THE EDUCATION SYSTEM OF 1980s
Education in Singapore in the 1980s was an interesting one. In Primary School, we sifted out the gifted ones for the Motherland when they were nine years of age and placed them together in a dedicated programme. We extracted the academically less-developed ones as well, extending their education by a couple of years at 12, into Primary 7 and 8 classes.

As students, we were then segregated further in Secondary Schools, into Special, Express and Normal Streams, according to our grades. We were ranked. Our classes were ranked. Our schools were ranked. We were part of an education caste of sorts, created neither by wealth nor family legacies, but by meritocracy.

THE TEXTBOOKS THAT GUIDED US ALL
The Curriculum Development Institute of Singapore (CDIS) was established in 1979, to provide textbooks for both Primary and Secondary levels of the education system. In 1996, CDIS was officially ceased, making way for Curriculum Planning and Development Division.
